Info from Sam the main driver of this initiative – Croydon Climate Action, which we paired up with
1. distance moved
Collectively 39,094 miles has been reached over 5 weeks, with 559 registered participants and an estimated 280 further people represented in groups (Croydon u3a, Downsview school, Falconwood Footsteps) so about 840 in total.
There have been some incredible team and individual performances. I will publish a full analysis on the website in the next few days but shout out to our top 3 teams: Croydon u3a, Falconwood Footsteps, and Simply Lunch.
2. funding
We have now secured £40,264 for the tree planting and green spaces. If the Urban Tree Challenge Fund applications from our partners, Trees for Cities and the Council, are successful this could rise to close to £80k. On top of that we have 2 grant applications out for a total of £15,000 which may be subject to matched funding if successful.
5. what’s next
a/ write-up and promotion of what we have done together
b/ finalise miles moved and collect any outstanding money
c/ transition to Trees for Cities and the Council who will run the next phase: tree planting and community engagement in the areas targeted for the planting
Comments from Jenny Wilson :
Croydon u3a (top of the leader board) completed 3,789.72 miles – what a brilliant effort.
I am delighted because:
A BIG THANK YOU to the u3a members who took part.
I will share further updates as I receive them.

I am delighted because:
- trees are good for lots of reasons
- we need more of them everywhere but especially in some parts of the borough
- it’s helping us keep fit & appreciate the outdoors
- it’s been really good as a team effort and a great opportunity to engage with Croydon Climate Action
- it’s got our name out there and we have gained a huge level of respect.
A BIG THANK YOU to the u3a members who took part.
