Following our recent talk by Laurence Scales on London’s sewers and Jenny’s accompanying innovative raffle prizes, we thought it would be useful to clarify a few basic facts about toilet paper.
The UK ranks third in the world for consumption of toilet paper. Unsurprisingly, the US is in first place.
Although most of the major brands in the UK carry the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) stamp, they use virgin paper pulp which comes from “sustainable” forest clearance. Virgin paper pulp has a very high environmental cost and is unnecessary. The best choices are recycled paper or bamboo. Agricultural waste is now also being used. If buying bamboo look for the FSC stamp.
What about the packaging? Is it recyclable. Choose either unpackaged or rolls packaged in biodegradable packaging.
